Phi Lambda Psi began at Washington University in St. Louis in 1994 when five sorority women joined together in order to promote issues pertaining to women's health. The formation of Phi Lambda Psi as an honorary devoted to women's health care comes to both the Greek and World communities during a time when it is desperately needed. The blatant realities of women's lives being claimed by the thousands due to the lack of research, funding, and just plain devaluing of women's bodies and lives are astonishing.
Women's health care is not a transitory or trendy topic. Regardless of the politics of breast cancer research, breast cancer will always exist as will other diseases that affect women. With this, it is impossible to deny the importance of the issues of women's health care, as the very survival of women ourselves depends on our actions. The issue is one that can be manipulated over time to include current thrusts in women's health care, as the care of women must always be a priority. As we are watching our mothers and grandmothers and sisters fall to early, unnecessary deaths, we are conscious that our actions and organizing are the only things that can even begin to save us. Who can deny that the very survival of humankind depends on the very survival of women?
With a ritual that is affirming for women and women's issues, as well as an organization that is bound to produce results, we cannot afford to not develop Phi Lambda Psi.
Women are in desperate need of creating a sphere dedicated to women's health and wellness, if for no other reason than to save our own lives. With this, we dedicate ourselves to the goals of the
Lambda Psi Honorary with the desire and expectation of bringing health and wellness to all women.
Phi Lambda Psi is the Greek Women's Health and Wellness Honorary at Washington University. The purpose of Phi Lambda Psi is threefold. First, to recognize Greek women who have a passion for women's health and wellness. Second, to bring together women leaders who have demonstrated commitment through their actions for the purpose of furthering awareness of women's health issues. Third, to bind together Greek women for the purpose of service towards the women's community. Phi Lambda Psi is dedicated to teaching others about issues concerning women's health, and its members strive to provide informative programming for Washington University students, faculty, and staff, as well as the greater St. Louis community. By providing a forum for discovery and discussion, Phi Lambda Psi brings crucial women's health issues to the attention of those who may be seeking answers
