ASKED QUESTIONS: |
• Do I have to have previous singing experience?
Not at all! Having done things like choir previously
won't count for or against you. In fact, a number
of current whispers never sang in high school. However,
we strongly recommend that you have at least
a little experience reading music.
• What voice parts are you looking for?
We are always looking for any and all voice parts.
Seriously.
• What do I have to prepare for an audition?
The first audition is very laid back. Each slot is
10 minutes long, and during that time we will have
you warm up and sing some scales, count/clap/snap
some rhythms, and sing a verse and chorus of a song
of your choice (anything you think shows off your
voice best!). It's very chill, low-key, and doesn’t
take long at all - we just want to hear you sing!
• What about in a callback?
Callbacks require a little more preparation. If you
are called back, you will need to prepare another
part (verse & chorus) of any song that you think
shows off your voice best. We prefer you sing a different
song and genre of music than in your first audition,
but its not held against you if you sing the same
song twice.
• Where and when do I find out if I made it?
Callback Lists are posted at Friedman Lounge in Wohl
and on the doors of the Music School in the early
morning of Monday, Sept. 5, 2005. Final audition results
will be posted late at night on Thursday, September
8, 2005. All groups post on the ACAC board simultaneously.
• Can I audition for more than one group?
Yes, of course. You may schedule an audition with
as many groups as you like. Callbacks get a bit trickier
to explain, so we recommend coming to the All A-Cappella
Group Information Session (Fall Semester Only) to
become acquainted with all the groups at WashU and
learn more about how our audition process works. Check
out the ACAC
website for a full explanation of the process.
• How much of a time commitment is the group?
A big one. Whispers rehearse seven hours a week, tour
over fall and spring breaks, and perform at numerous
gigs each semester, in addition to recording, competing,
singing around campus, and hosting our big annual
concert in March. Of course, we also have a ton of
fun together!
• Is all that worth it?
YES YES YES YES. A thousand times over. Ask anyone.
• Can I do anything else at WashU?
Of course. There are lots of other options at WashU,
and Whispers are known for always being busy! Current
members are members of fraternities and sororities,
Residential Advisors, members of student government,
on Intramural sport teams, sing with Chamber Choir,
work for admissions, and have held down a jobs, have
appeared in PAD shows, AST shows, danced with Jive
(dance team) and the Salsa Team, volunteered at community
service organizations, and taken full WashU course
loads, all while singing with the Whispers.
